YORK, S.C. — Zac Fuesser was almost certain he would be pitching for the University of Tennessee the next three years.
And for several days over the weekend and into Tuesday, it was looking more and more like he’d be wearing orange when the college baseball season rolled around.
But early Tuesday morning the Pittsburgh Pirates called and made a last-ditch offer to sign the 6-foot-2 left-handed pitcher they drafted in the 34th round (1,015th pick overall) in June.
Fuesser graduated from York Comprehensive High School last year and was a 19th-round pick by the Atlanta Braves. They followed him through summer ball and advised Fuesser to go to school and spend a year playing college baseball, which he did at Walters State.
