Vols have 13 new players on baseball roster

With school in session, Tennessee has tallied the new players on its baseball team and the official count is 13.

The group includes four players who were selected in the Major League draft in June and were eligible to sign until last week.

"This group really addresses a lot of needs for our program and we are extremely excited to have them all on campus,'' UT coach Todd Raleigh said. "Overall, this class is very physical and will bring a lot of pure athleticism to our roster, which will only help to create an even more competitive atmosphere. Offensively, we've added some power and speed, while we have a number of power arms coming in to pitch for us."

The four newcomers who were drafted are pitcher Jon Reed, who was chosen in the 21st round by Cincinnati, first baseman Cody Stubbs (29th round, Boston) pitcher Alan Walden (43rd round, Atlanta) and pitcher Andy Hillis (49th round, St. Louis).

Freshman outfielder Drew Steckenrider and infielder Matt Duffy, a transfer from Vermont, figure to play significant roles.

Overall, the group includes eight freshmen, four junior college players and the one transfer.

The Vols will hold tryouts for walk-on players Sept. 17-18 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium beginning at 5 p.m. each day.

Fall practice begins Sept. 20.
