Ex-Georgetown player transfers to Florida

Former Georgetown forward/center Vernon Macklin has decided to transfer to Florida, according to his prep school coach.

"I don't know when he's enrolling in classes," Hargrave Military Academy coach Kevin Keatts told the Gainesville Sun, "but I've spoken to him and I know that he's decided to transfer to Florida."

The 6-foot-9, 227-pound Macklin reportedly informed the coaching staff that he was transferring during a visit last Friday to Gainesville.

At Hargrave, Macklin was a McDonald's and Parade All-American and was listed by Scout.com as the No. 3 power forward in the 2006 recruiting class.

As a sophomore at Georgetown, Macklin averaged 3.4 points and 2.1 rebounds while backing up Roy Hibbert. With the consensus No. 1 freshman in the country, Greg Monroe, committed to Georgetown, Macklin decided he wanted out.

Macklin, who was a teammate of Florida center Marreese Speights at Hargrave, would have to sit out next season and have two seasons of eligibility left.

"He needed a change of scenery," Keatts told the newspaper. "He needs to recharge his battery and get back into doing the things that make him great."
